For several years, overseas recruitment kept many care homes staffed. That route has now closed, and a lot of managers are asking the same question: where do our care staff come from now?
Here's what changed, what it means for your home, and the practical ways to recruit in the UK.
What changed
On 22 July 2025, the Home Office stopped accepting new applications from overseas for care worker and senior care worker visas. Care homes can no longer sponsor someone from abroad for these roles.
There is a transition period. Until 22 July 2028, care workers who are already in the UK on a visa can still switch to a new sponsor in some circumstances, for example after working for a sponsor for at least three months. After that date, sponsorship for these roles is due to end completely.
Immigration rules change often, so check the latest guidance on GOV.UK or with an immigration adviser before making decisions about sponsored staff.
What it means for your home
- No new overseas hires for care worker roles.
- Plan ahead for sponsored staff you already employ, especially their visa end dates.
- More competition for UK-based candidates. Every home in your area is now recruiting from the same pool.
That last point is the big one. Homes that recruit well locally will cope. Homes that keep doing what they did before will struggle.
Where to find care staff now
1. People who want a career in care
Students and graduates of Health and Social Care, psychology, nursing and related subjects are often looking for hands-on experience. Many make excellent, committed carers.
2. Career changers
People from retail, hospitality and customer service already have the people skills that matter most. With the Care Certificate and a good induction, many become strong members of the team.
3. Local people who've never thought about care
Many people don't know care homes hire without experience. Adverts that say "no experience needed, full training provided" reach a much wider group.
4. Your own staff
A referral bonus for staff who recommend a friend who stays six months is one of the cheapest and most reliable ways to recruit.
Make your home easier to say yes to
With more homes chasing the same people, small things decide where candidates go:
- Reply within 24 hours. Good candidates are often applying to several homes.
- Show the real pay and hours in every advert.
- Make the interview easy: a short phone call first, then a visit.
- Offer a paid trial shift so both sides know it's right.
